TRINITY "5161" GRAIN HOPPER
AVAILABLE WITH NO-WORK-REQUIRED (NWR®) IN HO SCALE
How do you increase the likelihood
that the first railcar off a new line is of the highest quality and on time?
Trinity’s answer has been its Concurrent Product Development (CPD) program,
introduced in 1994. The first CPD project in 1994 was the development of
Trinity’s 5161 cu. ft. covered hopper for grain service. The 5161 was designed
to incorporate the best features of Trinity's 4750 c.f. covered hopper. A
through center sill is used to enhance the strength and durability that is
required for tough, unit train service. The rounded sides enhanced
capacity while the length was maintained to accommodate customer loading
facilities. A variety of options including several hatch configurations
are available. The car can also be equipped with Trinity's new and unique
"tube" center sill. This feature helps to facilitate lining, if
required, while maintaining the high-strength through center sill..
As of January 2001, approximately
18,000 of these cars are in service. Most of these are in traditional
grain service, but Trinity has produced a good amount for sugar service. The
leading customer has been the BNSF with over 7,000 cars. Other customers
include: Railroads: CP; CSX; Dakota, Minnesota
& Eastern; Kyle Railway; Norfolk Southern; KCS Leasing
Companies: GATX (second largest customer); G.E. Railcar; Chicago Freight
Car: CIT Group; Southern Illinois Railcar; TILC; NorRail (now Bombardier);
Newcourt (now Transport Capital); Shippers: A.E.
Staley; ADM; AGP; Cargill (third largest customer); ConAgra; Farmer's
