PS 3000 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

Pullman-Standard introduced the PS-2 3000 cubic-foot covered hopper in the mid-1950s to revolutionize the transport of dense bulk commodities. Heaviers loads like cement, sand, silica, clay, and dry chemicals quickly maxed out axle weight limits in standard boxcars, making specialized short covered hoppers a necessity. Pullman-Standard designed this two-bay car with a compact steel body, steep interior slope sheets, and bottom discharge gates. The low cubic capacity ensured shippers could fully load the interior space with dense minerals without overloading the car’s weight rating.

Railroads across North America quickly adopted the PS-2 3000 to replace aging 70-ton, two-bay designs and boxcars fitted with temporary grain doors. Class I carriers like the Santa Fe, Union Pacific, Southern Pacific, Milwaukee Road, and Pennsylvania Railroad bought huge fleets to serve mines, kilns, and cement plants. Private leasing companies also acquired thousands for chemical and industrial shippers. The rugged welded-steel design proved so durable that these cars formed the backbone of heavy industrial mineral transport for over three decades, with many remaining in regular service deep into the late 20th century.
