GP9u Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

Canadian Pacific launched the GP9u program in the 1970s to modernize its aging GP9 fleet. Workers at the Angus Shops in Montreal rebuilt over 200 units between 1973 and 1988. They chopped the original high short hoods to low-nose profiles to give crews a better view of the track. Upgrades included 645-series engine components, updated electrical systems, and improved winterization gear.

CP grouped the rebuilt units into specific series based on their daily jobs. The 1500 and 1600 series handled heavy yard duty, while the 8200 series pulled road freights. Other major railroads built similar low-nose rebuilds, including Canadian National and Santa Fe. These rugged locomotives provided decades of reliable service before moving on to shortlines and tourist railroads.
