33,700 Gallon Spiral Tank Car

Prototype Information

The ARI/Greenbrier 33,700-gallon DOT-112J340W is a specialized heavy-haul tank car. It transports Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) and other hazardous materials under high pressure. The J340W specification requires a jacketed, fusion-welded design with a 340 psi test pressure rating. This robust construction ensures structural integrity for high-hazard loads. Thermal protection systems and full-height head shields further reduce the risk of punctures or thermal failure during transit.

A coiled lap-welded outer jacket serves as the car’s most distinctive feature. ARI/Greenbrier wrapped long strips of steel around the tank with overlapping lap seams instead of using standard butt-welds. This process creates a prominent, textured spiral appearance across the exterior. This visual signature identifies the 33,700-gallon variant in the field. It highlights the car’s specialized role in North American logistics and its unique manufacturing heritage within the Greenbrier fleet.
