Gunderson Multi Max Autorack
Prototype Information
The Gunderson MultiMax autorack emerged in the early 2010s as Greenbrier/Gunderson’s answer to shifting auto-industry needs and evolving clearance standards. Built for bi-level and tri-level service in a single convertible design, the MultiMax introduced a modular interior that railroads could reconfigure without sending the car back to the shop—reducing downtime and fleet costs.
Gunderson paired this flexibility with a stronger, more damage-resistant rack structure, improved side screens, and upgraded end-door systems designed to reduce shifting and protect automobiles during transit. MultiMax racks quickly spread across Class I railroads, typically mounted on 89-foot flatcar platforms from TTX, forming the backbone of modern automotive service in North America.
