68' Bulkhead Flat Car

The Bethlehem Steel Company BSH71A bulkhead flat car entered production in the early 1970s. Designed with a 68-foot length and a 100-ton capacity, these cars featured distinctive high bulkheads to secure heavy loads. Bethlehem Steel built these rugged cars primarily for the Trailer Train Company (TTX), which distributed them across various North American railroads. They quickly became a staple for transporting lumber, structural steel, and pipes due to their reinforced decks and reliable cushioning systems.

Standard features included an expansive loading surface and heavy-duty tie-down points for secure transit. Over the decades, many BSH71A cars underwent upgrades to maintain their service life, including newer air brake systems and modern reflective safety markings. While newer car designs eventually entered the market, many of these 68-foot workhorses remained in active service well into the 21st century. Their longevity and high capacity made them essential tools for moving industrial commodities across the continent.
