85' General American G85 Flat Car
Prototype Information
GATC introduced the G85 flatcar in 1959. This design revolutionized early intermodal service. It featured a unique recessed center channel. This allowed trailers to sit lower and clear tight bridge clearances. Drivers even secured their own trailers from the cab using a specialized pull-chain hitch. This innovative system aimed to eliminate manual labor on the ground.
The G85 quickly evolved as containerization grew. GATC added adjustable rub rails to handle both trailers and containers. Major railroads like the Southern Pacific and Great Northern rushed to add these versatile cars to their fleets. Eventually, simpler hitch designs replaced the complex G85 mechanism. Still, the car remains a vital link in the move toward modern intermodal transport.
