ACF 5250 Plastics Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

American Car and Foundry (ACF) introduced the Center Flow 5250 cubic foot covered hopper in the mid-1960s. It specifically targeted the rapidly growing plastics industry. The car featured a unique pear-shaped cross-section and eliminated the traditional center sill. This design created a smooth interior that prevented plastic pellets from getting trapped in corners. Shippers required this “clean-bore” environment to avoid contamination between different batches of resin. ACF used a “Center Flow” philosophy to ensure that every ounce of product would gravity-slide toward the discharge outlets during unloading.

The 5250 model became the gold standard for plastic pellet transport throughout the 1970s and 1980s. To protect the purity of the plastic, these cars featured specialized pneumatic outlets for vacuum unloading. Most models used four round loading hatches on the roof to allow for precise filling at chemical plants. Many cars also received interior epoxy linings to provide an extra layer of protection against moisture and corrosion. This specific configuration allowed the 5250 to serve as a mobile silo for manufacturers. Even as larger cars entered the market, the ACF 5250 remained a staple of the global supply chain for raw plastic materials.
