PS 4000 Coal Gondola
Prototype Information
Pullman-Standard introduced the PS 4000 high-side coal gondola during the early 1970s. The car arrived just as the American coal boom triggered an urgent demand for efficient unit trains. Boasting a 4000-cubic-foot capacity, the steel car was designed specifically to maximize payloads of lower-density western coal. It quickly caught the attention of railroads and private power companies looking to streamline bulk logistics.
These 50-foot gondolas featured heavily braced steel sides to withstand the immense pressure of rapid flood-loading. One end of each car typically carried a rotary coupler, allowing massive unit trains to enter rotary dumpers and unload completely upside down without uncoupling. Various utility fleets operated vast numbers of these cars. As the coal market shifted decades later, many of these rugged gondolas found a second life hauling scrap metal across North America.
