Trinity RD-4 Coal Hopper
Prototype Information
The Trinity RD-4 emerged in the mid-1990s. Trinity Industries designed this “Auto-Flood” coal hopper to meet the rising demand for Powder River Basin coal. The car featured an aerodynamic profile, five large discharge bays, and a lightweight aluminum body. This aluminum construction allowed the car to carry roughly 120 tons of coal. It maximized payload while maintaining a gross rail load of 286,000 lbs.
The RD-4 handled multiple unloading methods with ease. Trinity equipped the car with both rotary couplers and bottom discharge gates. This dual-functionality allowed utilities to use the cars in rotary dump facilities or over automated bottom-dump pits. Major western railroads like BNSF and Union Pacific quickly added the versatile car to their fleets. Although Trinity later replaced the model with the newer RD-6, the RD-4 still runs in unit trains across North America today.
