Express Box Car
Prototype Information
The express box car debuted in the late 19th century to bridge the gap between slow freight and high-speed passenger service. Railroads built these cars to passenger standards, equipping them with high-speed trucks and steam heat lines. This allowed them to run at the end of premier passenger trains. They carried time-sensitive cargo like newspapers, perishables, and high-value mail. To match the trains they followed, railroads often painted them in dark greens or Tuscan reds instead of standard freight brown.
The most significant shift occurred after World War II. The government had commissioned thousands of Troop Sleepers and kitchen cars for the war effort, leaving behind a massive surplus of steel-bodied cars. Major railroads like the Rock Island and Pennsylvania RR bought these rugged cars for express service. Workers stripped the bunks and installed large side doors to handle freight. These former military cars hauled high-priority cargo across North America until air freight and trucking triggered their retirement in the late 1960s.
