72' Greenbrier 7780 Reefer
Prototype Information
Greenbrier introduced the 7780 cubic foot refrigerated boxcar in the mid-2000s. These cars modernized high-capacity, temperature-controlled transport. Shippers needed them to move frozen goods like french fries from the Pacific Northwest to eastern markets. With an interior length of 72 feet, they are among the largest reefers on the rails. Greenbrier equipped them with diesel refrigeration units and heavy insulation. A tight-sealing plug door maintains precise temperatures during long-haul trips.
The 7780 design replaced older cryogenic cooling methods with reliable mechanical refrigeration. This shift improved consistency in the cold chain and slashed product spoilage. Major companies like Lineage Logistics and Union Pacific now operate vast fleets of these cars. Union Pacific frequently uses them in its “Salad Shooter” service. Their massive capacity and Plate F clearance define the modern industry standard for perishable freight.
