American Limited Models HO Scale Trinity 3281 2 Bay Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

Trinity Industries introduced the 3281 cubic foot 2-bay covered hopper in the 1990s to haul heavy, dense commodities. This car primarily carries cement, roofing granules, and sand. Its short 39-foot length and 286,000-pound gross rail load allow it to carry maximum weight in a compact footprint. The design features a curved roof and smooth side panels to reduce weight while maintaining structural integrity. Unlike larger grain hoppers, these cars use two large discharge bays to unload dense material quickly via gravity.

The 3281 model became an industry standard as the construction and fracking sectors expanded. Its rugged steel construction handles the abrasive nature of sand and cement without significant wear. Most units feature round hatches on the roof to prevent dust from escaping during the loading process. This hopper has largely replaced older 2,700-cubic-foot and 2,900-cubic-foot designs from previous decades. Today, thousands of these cars operate in large blocks or “unit trains,” moving essential raw materials to concrete plants and industrial sites across North America.
