F3 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD F3, launched in 1945, helped drive the diesel revolution, replacing steam locomotives across North America. With 1,500 horsepower from its EMD 567B V16 engine, it delivered reliable performance for both freight and passenger railroads.
Building on the success of the FT model, the F3 introduced upgraded electrical components and a sleeker design. Railroads like Santa Fe, Union Pacific, and Pennsylvania Railroad put it to work, taking advantage of its power and efficiency.
By 1949, the F7 took over, but many F3s kept rolling for years, some even rebuilt to match newer locomotives. Today, a few still run on heritage railroads, preserving their place in rail history.
