FP45 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD FP45 debuted in 1967 as a high-horsepower, full-width cowl-body locomotive designed to modernize passenger service. Railroads wanted something bold and fast to replace aging F-units, and the FP45 delivered with a 3,600-hp 20-645E3 engine, SD45 running gear, and a sleek profile that looked at home on premier trains.
Santa Fe and Milwaukee Road were the only buyers, using the FP45 on their top-tier passenger runs. The cowl design improved crew comfort and protected equipment at high speeds, while steam generators supported traditional passenger heating systems. When Amtrak took over U.S. passenger service in 1971, Santa Fe retained its FP45s, putting them to work on high-priority trains, fast mail service, and later in freight duty.
Santa Fe eventually rebuilt the FP45 fleet into SDFP45s, extending their service life into the 1990s. Despite limited production, the FP45 became an icon—one of EMD’s final streamlined locomotives and a standout blend of power, style, and versatility.
