GP40-2 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD GP40-2 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1972 to 1986. It produces 3,000 horsepower using a 16-cylinder 645E3 engine. It belongs to EMD’s Dash 2 line, which added more reliable electronics and components compared to earlier models.
Railroads across North America, including major carriers like Norfolk Southern, CSX, and Union Pacific, bought hundreds of GP40-2s. They used them for road freight, switching, and local service. The GP40-2 earned a reputation for being durable, versatile, and easy to maintain.
Many units are still in service today, often rebuilt or upgraded for modern use. The GP40-2 remains one of EMD’s most successful and long-lasting locomotive designs.
