GP40P-2 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD GP40P-2 rolled out in 1974 as a passenger-focused variant of the GP40-2. Southern Pacific bought the only three built, numbered 3197–3199. EMD stretched the frame to 70 feet—11 feet longer than a standard GP40-2—to fit a steam generator at the back. The extra length gave them a distinctive profile compared to freight units.
Southern Pacific put the trio to work on its San Francisco–San Jose Peninsula commuter trains. When Amtrak absorbed most passenger service, SP kept the units for contract commuter runs. In the 1980s, SP removed the steam generators and rebuilt them for freight service, extending their usefulness.
The story didn’t end there. New Jersey Transit later picked up all three locomotives, rebuilt them again, and returned them to passenger duty. Few locomotives illustrate the flexibility of the GP40-2 design as clearly as the GP40P-2.
