SD80MAC Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD SD80MAC was introduced in 1995 as a 5,000-horsepower, AC-traction locomotive powered by EMD’s 20-cylinder 710G3B engine. It was among the most powerful single-engine locomotives of its era and featured a wide “North American” safety cab and advanced AC traction motors for superior adhesion.

Only 30 units were built, all for Conrail (numbered 4100–4129). When Conrail was split in 1999, CSX received 13 units and Norfolk Southern took the remaining 17. In 2014, CSX traded 12 of its SD80MACs to Norfolk Southern, consolidating nearly the entire fleet under NS ownership. The locomotives primarily handled heavy coal and ore trains before being retired by the late 2010s. The SD80MAC served as an important bridge between EMD’s SD70 series and later AC-traction models like the SD70MAC and SD70ACe.
