In 1979, the Union Tank Car Company introduced the 13,000-gallon acid tank car to safely transport highly corrosive liquids. These cars specifically carry dense, heavy loads like sulfuric acid. Because acid is so heavy, these cars have smaller tanks than general-service cars to avoid exceeding rail weight limits. Most units feature a straight-tank design and range in capacity from 13,000 to 13,600 gallons. Their construction includes specialized interior linings and top-mounted loading valves to prevent leaks.

Production continued into the late 1990s and included several structural updates. Early versions used a four-section tank body, while later models shifted to a three-section design with improved brake systems. Major leasing companies like Procor, GE Rail Services, and GATX operated large fleets across North America. These cars carry hazardous materials, so they utilize double-shelf couplers to prevent punctures during accidents. Today, these cars remain essential for industries like oil refining, metal manufacturing, and fertilizer production.
