20,000 Gallon Tank Car
Prototype Information
General American Transportation Corporation introduced the 20,000-gallon tank car in the late 1960s. These cars transported intermediate-density liquids like vegetable oils, chemicals, and fertilizers. GATC designed them as non-insulated, general-service vessels for their massive GATX leasing fleet. The cars featured a distinct straight-barrel silhouette and came in different structural phases. These versions usually varied by their body bolster designs and tank course construction.
GATC supplied these versatile cars to almost every major railroad and many private shippers in North America. Their durable steel construction allowed them to stay in service for over forty years. Many cars transitioned from carrying high-grade chemicals to hauling fuel oil or water for maintenance projects. This design set the standard for reliability in liquid transport for decades. Today, the model remains a favorite for railfans because of the many colorful paint schemes used throughout its history.
