23,000 Gallon Tank Train Tank Car

Prototype Information

GATX developed the GAI-23,000 gallon “TankTrain” car in the early 1970s. This design revolutionized bulk liquid transport for fuel oil and petroleum. Unlike standard cars, the TankTrain uses flexible hoses and automated valves to link a whole string of cars together. A crew pumps liquid into just one end of the consist. The fluid then flows through every connected car automatically. This system slashed the labor and infrastructure costs typically needed at loading terminals.

The TankTrain became a railroading icon, especially in the American West. Southern Pacific famously used these cars to haul crude oil over the steep Tehachapi Pass. The design excelled at high-volume, point-to-point service. However, its specialized equipment made it less practical for smaller, independent shippers. While many original cars are now retired or repurposed, the TankTrain remains a major milestone in freight innovation. It proved that connecting cars like a single pipeline could move massive amounts of cargo with ease.
