NSC 6000 Gondola
Prototype Information
National Steel Car, a premier Canadian rolling stock builder, introduced the NSC 6000 Gondola in 2018. The company designed this specialized 6,000-cubic-foot railcar as a lower-sided variant of its massive 6,400-cubic-foot model. The solid-bottom car maximizes cargo volume while still meeting standard Plate C clearance limits. National Steel Car engineered this rugged vehicle specifically to haul bulky, low-density materials like scrap metal, industrial debris, and bulk waste across North America’s Class I railroad networks.
Today, the NSC 6000 is a common sight on modern freight trains, running either individually or in large blocks. These open-top cars carry an Association of American Railroads (AAR) “GTS” classification and support a gross rail load of 286,000 pounds. Heavy-duty 100-ton trucks easily handle these massive payloads. Industrial producers, metal resellers, and leasing companies—including American Iron & Metal (AIMX) and Triple M Metals (TLPX)—own large fleets of these cars. Logistics providers rely heavily on the railcar’s durability and excellent volume-to-weight ratio for demanding freight routes.
