NSC 6400 Gondola

Prototype Information

National Steel Car introduced the massive NSC 6400 Gondola in 2006 to meet the growing demand for high-volume waste and scrap transportation. The Canadian builder designed this 64-foot-long car with an expansive 6,400-cubic-foot capacity, making it significantly taller and longer than traditional gondolas. To maximize internal volume, the engineering team utilized high, solid steel walls with pinned corner connections and welded body construction. This open-top design specifically targets relatively low-density, high-bulk materials that require immense physical space without exceeding maximum rail weight thresholds.

The rugged car quickly established itself as a standard workhorse for North American construction, recycling, and waste disposal industries. Operating at a gross rail load of 286,000 pounds, the vehicle glides on heavy-duty 100-ton trucks and relies on a durable braking system to manage heavy payloads. Industrial firms, waste management agencies, and private leasing companies deploy these cars in both dedicated unit trains and mixed freight manifests across Class I networks. Operators frequently transport municipal solid waste to remote regional landfills, or haul loose scrap metal from processing yards directly to steel mills.
