PS-2 2893 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

Pullman-Standard introduced the PS-2 2893 cubic foot covered hopper in 1954. This 3-bay car revolutionized how railroads moved dry bulk commodities. Before this design, crews often spent hours loading bags into boxcars. The PS-2 2893 changed that by offering a weather-tight, 70-ton capacity vessel for grain, potash, and minerals. It featured distinct round roof hatches and a unique 4-3-4 side post arrangement. Early adopters like the Santa Fe and Southern Railway quickly integrated these cars into their fleets, proving their versatility across North America.

The PS-2 2893 bridged the gap between early small hoppers and the massive jumbo cars used today. Its rugged steel construction kept many units in service for over forty years. Eventually, railroads moved these durable cars into maintenance roles, such as hauling locomotive sand. This model effectively ended the era of shipping grain in boxcars and modernized the entire industry. Today, its distinctive silhouette remains a favorite for railfans and modelers who appreciate its industrial legacy.
