C40-9 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

GE introduced the C40-9 in 1990 as part of its Dash 9 series, designed specifically for Norfolk Southern. With a 4,000-horsepower 7FDL-16 engine, advanced microprocessor controls, and modular construction, the C40-9 delivered powerful, reliable performance for heavy mainline freight service.

The locomotives featured the standard Dash 9 carbody with a conventional cab, optimized for NS’s operational needs. They became a key part of Norfolk Southern’s fleet, handling long, demanding freight trains efficiently and reliably.

The C40-9 was unique to Norfolk Southern, bridging the gap between the earlier Dash 8 series and later Dash 9-44CW locomotives.
