B39-8 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD B39-8 is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1984 to 1987. It is part of the Dash 8 series and produces 3,900 horsepower using a 16-cylinder 710G engine. The “B” in its name indicates a B-B wheel arrangement, meaning it has four axles on two trucks.

The B39-8 was designed for railroads needing a powerful yet lighter locomotive that could handle higher speeds with less track wear. It was often used in freight service where agility and acceleration were important. Major North American railroads, including Union Pacific, operated the B39-8.

Although production was relatively limited, the B39-8 earned a reputation for reliability and efficiency. Many units were later rebuilt or upgraded, and some continue to operate on regional or shortline railroads today.
