U30B Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD U30B is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1966 to 1976. It belongs to the U-boat series and was designed to deliver 3,000 horsepower using a 16-cylinder 645E3 engine. The “B” in its name indicates it has four axles (a B-B wheel arrangement).

The U30B was built to compete with General Electric’s U30B and other high-horsepower locomotives of the time. It served primarily in road freight service and was popular with several North American railroads.

Although EMD produced fewer U30Bs compared to some other models, the locomotive was valued for its power and versatility. Many U30Bs operated into the 1980s before being retired, rebuilt, or sold to smaller railroads.
