48' Pines Trailer
Prototype Information
Pines Trailer Corporation launched the 48-foot dry van in the late 1980s. This design followed new federal laws that allowed wider and longer trailers. These units measured 102 inches wide to maximize cargo space. Pines engineered them specifically for the heavy demands of “piggyback” rail service. They added a thick metal reinforcement strip along the top rail. This strip protected the trailer body from damage during crane lifts at rail terminals.
Major leasing fleets like XTRA and Transamerica bought these trailers in massive numbers. Shippers loved the extra length because it fit two more standard pallets than the older 45-foot models. This change boosted efficiency for moving everything from food to electronics. Even after 53-foot trailers became common, the 48-foot Pines stayed in rail service for decades. Their heavy-duty build handled the stress of train travel better than lighter highway models.
