53' Well Car
Prototype Information
In the early 2000s, TrentonWorks in Trenton, Nova Scotia built a large fleet of 53-foot intermodal well cars using the Gunderson/Greenbrier “All-Purpose” design. These cars could haul either double-stacked containers or intermodal trailers, giving railroads the flexibility to handle a wide range of freight. Florida East Coast Railway acquired a significant number of these cars and put them to work on its growing intermodal network.
By the late 2000s, the shift toward 53-foot domestic containers pushed TTX Company to modernize its fleet. TTX rebuilt many of its older 48-foot Gunderson well cars by extending the wells to handle 53-foot containers. The company also gave the cars fresh paint and applied its new Tuscan red logo. Other owners followed suit, updating their 48-foot well cars with similar modifications to keep up with evolving freight demands.
