SD40-2 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

Introduced in 1972, the EMD/GMD SD40-2 became one of the most iconic and successful locomotives in North American railroading. Built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) in the U.S. and General Motors Diesel (GMD) in Canada, the SD40-2 delivered 3,000 horsepower from EMD’s proven 16-cylinder 645E3 engine. Its longer frame, HT-C trucks, and “Dash-2” modular electronics improved reliability, ride quality, and ease of maintenance over earlier designs. Railroads across the continent—from Class I carriers to regional and short lines—embraced the SD40-2 for its power, simplicity, and endurance. More than 3,900 units rolled out between 1972 and 1989, and decades later, many remain in active service, a testament to its exceptional engineering and lasting legacy.
