ATSF Peaked Roof
Prototype Information
The Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway introduced its peaked roof cabooses in the early 1920s as a step forward from earlier wood designs. These cars, built of steel but often retaining wooden interiors, featured a distinct peaked or “raised center” roofline. The design gave the caboose a stronger structure and provided better ventilation, while also echoing the look of traditional wooden cupola cabooses.
Santa Fe ordered hundreds of these cabooses from its own shops and outside builders, with many serving well into the 1960s. They became a trademark of the railroad, instantly recognizable with their tall cupolas and angular rooflines. While later steel bay-window and wide-vision designs gradually displaced them, the peaked roof cabooses carried generations of crews over the system’s vast territory. A number of them survive today in museums and on tourist railroads, standing as classic examples of Santa Fe’s caboose evolution.
