ARI 5200 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

American Railcar Industries (ARI) introduced the 5200 Covered Hopper to meet the growing demand for transporting dry bulk commodities like grain, cement, and sand. With a capacity of around 5,200 cubic feet, the car quickly became a favorite among railroads and leasing companies due to its efficiency and versatility. Its triple-bay design, equipped with three bottom outlet gates, allows for fast and easy unloading. Built primarily from steel or aluminum, the car’s sturdy construction withstands the rigors of bulk commodity transport.

ARI designed the 5200 with features like pressure differential systems and gravity unloading, making it even more effective for handling large volumes of material. As the need for bulk transportation increased, railroads and leasing companies added these hoppers to their fleets in large numbers. Their ability to move significant quantities of material over long distances made them indispensable in industries such as agriculture, construction, and chemicals.
