Prototype Information
The Pullman-Standard 4750 covered hopper debuted in the early 1970s and quickly set the standard for modern grain service. Built with a 4,750-cubic-foot capacity and rugged 100-ton design, the three-bay car handled everything from grain to fertilizer with speed and efficiency. Pullman-Standard began production around 1972 and turned out more than 50,000 cars through the early 1980s. Nearly every major railroad rostered PS-4750s, painted in a wide mix of railroad and lease fleet schemes. Its distinctive curved-side body, large top hatches, and efficient gravity outlets made it a favorite with shippers and railroads alike. The 4750’s success cemented Pullman-Standard’s reputation as a leader in freight car design and influenced nearly every covered hopper that followed.
