F40PH Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD F40PH debuted in 1975 as a reliable, versatile diesel-electric locomotive for passenger service. Powered by a 3,000-horsepower 16-cylinder 645E3 engine, it featured a B-B wheel arrangement and a straightforward, functional design that prioritized ease of maintenance.
The F40PH became the backbone of Amtrak’s diesel fleet, also serving commuter railroads such as Via Rail, GO Transit, and MARC. Its combination of power, reliability, and serviceability allowed it to handle both long-distance and regional passenger trains. Many units remained in service into the 2000s, making the F40PH one of North America’s most successful passenger locomotives of the late 20th century.
