RSC-14 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
Canadian National created the Alco RSC-14 in the mid-1970s. CN needed locomotives for branch lines in the Maritimes with very light rails. They modified 38 existing MLW RS-18s to solve this problem. Mechanics swapped the original four-axle trucks for six-axle A1A trucks from retired units. These extra wheels spread the engine’s weight more evenly. This change let the heavy locomotives run safely on light 56-pound track.
CN also dropped the engine’s output from 1,800 to 1,400 horsepower. This prevented the wheels from slipping under the lighter load. These unique units became the primary power for rural lines in Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick. Most retired in the early 1990s when CN closed those branch lines. While some went to Cuba or Jamaica, two stay in Canadian museums today. They represent a clever era of railroad resourcefulness.
