E8 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD E8 is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) from 1949 to 1954. It uses two 12-cylinder 567B engines to produce 2,250 horsepower. EMD designed the E8 specifically for passenger service as part of its E-unit series.

Railroads like Pennsylvania Railroad, Union Pacific, and Illinois Central put the E8 at the front of their top passenger trains. Its streamlined body, stainless steel panels, and bold “bulldog” nose gave it a striking look.

As passenger service declined in the 1960s and 1970s, railroads started retiring the E8. Amtrak and some commuter agencies rebuilt and reused several units. Today, a few still operate on tourist lines or sit preserved in museums, showing off their classic design and strong performance.
