F40PHM-2 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD F40PHM-2 was built for Metra between 1991 and 1992. EMD produced 30 units, marking the last locomotives made at its La Grange plant. These engines featured a full-width cowl body and a sloped nose. The look came from the earlier EMD F69PHAC, leading to the nickname “Winnebago.”
Each unit used a 16-cylinder EMD 645E3C engine, producing 3,200 horsepower. They had a 56:21 gear ratio and could reach 108 mph. The design included HT-B trucks and dynamic brakes.
Metra used these locomotives for commuter service around Chicago. They matched Metra’s performance needs and safety standards. Over time, Metra rebuilt many into the F40PHM-3 model. These upgrades improved systems but kept the same body style.
The F40PHM-2 stands out for its design, reliability, and place in EMD’s history.
