F59PH Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

EMD introduced the F59PH in 1988 as a rugged, high-performance passenger locomotive built for commuter and regional service. Drawing on proven GP-series technology, EMD designed it to deliver strong power, easy maintenance, and reliable daily operation.

Driven by a 3,000-horsepower 12-cylinder 710G engine and equipped with Head End Power, the F59PH gave railroads the muscle to handle heavy commuter trains while keeping passengers comfortable. GO Transit in Toronto led the way with large orders, showing how well the locomotive fit demanding urban service.

Its success spread quickly—Metrolink, Amtrak California, and other agencies adopted the design, making the F59PH a staple of North American commuter rail through the 1990s and beyond.
