GP9rm Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
CN started a rebuild program at the Pointe Ste. Charles shops in the early 1980s. This project extended the service lives of their GP9 fleet. The resulting GP9RM locomotives fell into three distinct groups. The 4000/4100 series served as road units while the 7000 series handled switching duties. The 7200/200 series operated as mother and slug pairs. Slugs lacked a prime mover and drew power from the mother unit. Crews cut down the long hoods and added ballast to increase their weight.
The GP9RM featured a chopped short hood and three-colored marker lights on both ends. Mechanics moved the bell to the hood side and converted the dynamic brake blister into intake filters. Internally, the units received upgraded 16-645C prime movers and better electrical systems. The 4000/4100 road units used the short hood as the front. The 7000/7200 switchers kept the long hood as the front. Minor differences appeared between individual locomotives throughout the ten-year program. These units served across the entire CN North American system.
