SD10 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The Milwaukee Road rebuilt 21 six-axle locomotives—mostly former SD7s and a few SD9s—at its West Milwaukee shops between 1974 and 1976, creating the SD10 (class 18-ERS-6). They upgraded the engines to roughly 1,800 horsepower, modernized the electrical systems, and improved short-hood visibility, giving the locomotives renewed power and reliability.

The SD10s handled freight across the Milwaukee Road system for years. After the railroad’s merger and later sales, many found second lives on short lines or in preservation, proving the rebuild program extended the usefulness of first-generation road power.
