50' PC&F 5241 or 5317 Box Car

Prototype Information

Pacific Car & Foundry introduced the 5241 and 5317 boxcars in 1979 at the height of the Incentive Per Diem boom. The company built 799 cars, with capacities of either 5,241 or 5,317 cubic feet. Their exterior-post sides, flat roofs, and clean design made them easy to spot on the rails.

The Berlin Mills Railway of New Hampshire leased 399 cars and painted them in bright green, earning them the nickname “Berlin Mills boxcars.” The Boston & Maine took 200, and the Olympic Railroad in Washington picked up another 200. These cars hauled paper products, appliances, and general merchandise across the country.

The Berlin Mills fleet became the most famous of the group, standing out as some of the most recognizable boxcars of the IPD era. Many later moved into lease fleets and regional service, but railfans still remember them best in their striking green paint.
