60' Trenton Works 6348 Box Car

Prototype Information

The Trenton Works 6348 cubic-foot boxcar entered production in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It met the rising demand for high-capacity equipment to haul paper, forest products, and other bulky manufactured goods. Based in Nova Scotia, the Trenton Works plant designed these cars with high-strength steel and Plate F clearances. This maximized the interior volume while staying within standard railroad height restrictions. Many large leasing companies and Class I railroads added them to their fleets to replace aging 50-foot cars from the previous era.

These boxcars featured a 10-foot 6-inch wide plug door or double-plug door configuration. This wide opening allowed forklift operators to load large rolls of paper or pallets with ease. The cars also included advanced cushioning devices to protect delicate cargo from jarring during transit. While newer designs from competitors eventually emerged, the 6348 remains a common sight in modern freight consists. It stands as one of the final major designs produced at the historic Trenton facility before its closure.
