AutoFlood III Rapid Discharge Hopper

Prototype Information

FreightCar America introduced the AutoFlood III in the early 2000s. It replaced older aluminum hoppers in heavy-haul coal service. This model features an aluminum body on a steel underframe. This hybrid design cuts weight to save fuel. It also provides the strength to handle massive rail forces.

The car uses five automatic gates for fast unloading. A wayside pickup shoe triggers these gates as the train moves. This allows the train to empty its load without stopping. Engineers improved the interior slopes to prevent coal from sticking. Today, these cars haul coal efficiently across North America.
