Enterprise Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The Enterprise covered hopper began on the New York Central in 1939–40. These early cars performed well. In 1948, NYC built a larger 2,000-cu-ft group under Lot 747-H. They used Standard Railway Equipment roof panels with four offset hatches per side. Some received small circular hatches for flour and sugar. NYC built 750 cars, followed by more in Lots 783–785. The later lots added diagonal-panel roofs but kept the same overall design.

That same year, Canadian National built 150 similar cars. They differed in roof style, side panels, and hatch spacing. CN kept them in service for many years, with some later converted to ballast cars. NYC’s cars also lasted into the Penn Central era. Many were repainted jade green or gray, and the jade-green cars often became company sand cars.
