G22 Gondola
Prototype Information
The Pennsylvania Railroad introduced the G22 gondola between 1915 and 1917. It was a 46-foot, 70-ton steel car with fixed ends and drop-bottom doors. The design included extended sills over the couplers. It was the first PRR gondola of this length and one of the earliest in the U.S.
PRR built over 5,700 G22s and related versions. The car’s design influenced the USRA’s 70-ton mill gondola during World War I.
In the 1930s and 1940s, PRR rebuilt many G22s. They removed the bottom doors and added solid steel floors. This improved durability and made the cars easier to maintain.
The G22 hauled bulk freight and containerized less-than-carload shipments. Some had removable coke racks. Others carried hopper-bottom containers.
Many G22s stayed in service through the Penn Central and Conrail eras. Railroads later used them for maintenance-of-way work.
The G22 proved durable, versatile, and well-suited to changing needs over several decades.
