G22 Gondola
Prototype Information
The Pennsylvania Railroad built the G22 gondola between 1915 and 1917 as a 46-foot, 70-ton steel car with fixed ends, drop-bottom doors, and extended sills over the couplers—the first PRR gondola of this length and one of the earliest in the U.S. PRR produced over 5,700 G22s and related versions, and the design directly influenced the USRA 70-ton mill gondola during World War I. In the 1930s and 1940s, the railroad rebuilt many G22s with solid floors, removing the bottom doors to boost durability and simplify maintenance. Railroads used them to haul bulk freight and containerized less-than-carload shipments, with some fitted with removable coke racks or hopper-bottom containers. Many G22s remained in service through Penn Central and Conrail, later serving in maintenance-of-way roles, proving their durability and versatility over decades.
