C30-7 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
General Electric launched the C30-7 in 1976 as a key part of the Dash 7 line. It featured a 16-cylinder FDL engine. This motor produced 3,000 horsepower. The six-axle locomotive replaced the older U30C model. It offered better fuel efficiency and electrical reliability. Major railroads like Burlington Northern and Union Pacific used these units for heavy coal drags throughout the 1980s.
GE built over 1,100 units for North American railroads before production ended in 1986. Many locomotives found second lives through rebuild programs or international exports. This model proved GE could compete with the EMD SD40-2. Most C30-7s have retired from Class I rosters today. Their rugged design helped GE become the leading locomotive supplier in North America.
