M60A1 Tank

Prototype Information

The M60A1 Patton entered service in the early 1960s. It improved the base M60 design to counter Soviet T-54 and T-55 tanks. Designers added a new “long-nose” turret. This turret increased ballistic protection and created more internal room for the crew. The tank used the 105mm M68 rifled gun as its primary weapon. It served as the backbone of the U.S. Army and Marine Corps during the Cold War. New steering controls and better seating also improved crew efficiency.

The military updated the M60A1 throughout its long career. Engineers added gun stabilization so the tank could fire accurately while moving. They also introduced the Rise package to increase mechanical reliability. The M60A1 fought in major global conflicts, including the Yom Kippur War and Operation Desert Storm. The U.S. Marine Corps relied heavily on the platform even after the M1 Abrams arrived. The tank earned a reputation for reliability and a highly adaptable design.
