40' S-40 Stock Car

Prototype Information

The S-40-5 stock car was a type of livestock rail car used by the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP). It was part of the S-40 series of stock cars, which were built to transport cattle, sheep, and other livestock.

Introduced in the 1920s-1930s, the S-40-5 improved on earlier stock car designs with better ventilation and durability.

Built with wooden slats and steel reinforcements, it provided airflow while maintaining structural strength.

Carried livestock to markets and slaughterhouses, supporting the agricultural economy.

Remained in service through the mid-20th century before trucking and modern all-steel stock cars replaced it.
