Bethgon Coal Gondola
Prototype Information
The BethGon coal gondola was introduced by Bethlehem Steel in the early 1980s. It was designed as a lightweight, high-capacity car for unit coal trains. Made of aluminum, it helped maximize coal loads while reducing empty weight. Most BethGons were rotary dump equipped, allowing faster unloading. They typically had 5,000 to 5,400 cubic feet of capacity. Utilities and railroads widely adopted them in the Powder River Basin era. Production continued into the 2000s under successor companies like Johnstown America. Many remain in service today.
