42' Coil Car

Prototype Information

The Thrall 42-foot single-hood coil steel car was introduced in the mid-1990s. Built for wrapped cold-rolled steel coils, it featured a single insulated hood and a longitudinal loading trough with dividers. The design shared many features with other Thrall coil cars, including body construction and jack pads, but was shorter and had only one hood.

In 2001, Trinity Industries purchased Thrall and continued production of the 42-foot cars. Later Trinity-built cars, delivered as late as 2012, added details like separate handrails at the car ends and relocated end railings off the hood. These cars operate nationwide, often in singles or small groups.
